Ampersand’s Museum Series Claybord is the only professional painting panel crafted with a true kaolin clay ground, offering artists a smooth, absorbent surface for painting. This exceptional clay-coated panel is inspired by the traditional clay-gesso surfaces used by Renaissance artists. It provides crisp detail, clean colours, and unparalleled control for fine artwork and mixed media approaches.
Claybord allows both additive and subtractive techniques, enabling artists to etch and scratch into the surface using scratchboard tools or to lighten and refine their work with oil-free steel wool or fine sandpaper. This flexibility supports a wide variety of media, including:
- Acrylics and watercolour
- Inks and alcohol inks
- Gouache and egg tempera
- Graphite, airbrush, and collage work
- Image transfers, printmaking, and mounting photographs
Every Claybord panel is constructed on Ampersand’s premium, warp-resistant Hardbord™ core, making it one of the most stable substrates on the market. Sealed with Archiva-Seal™ to prevent Support-Induced Discoloration (SID), this panel is archival and durable, designed for professional use and detailed illustrations. Available in a 1/8″ flat profile, it works beautifully with both traditional and experimental techniques. Each panel measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches and is handmade in the USA using FSC-certified materials.
