Product Details

Product Overview

The Hikul compact dwarf sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a male clone, specifically designed to pollinate female sea buckthorn varieties in gardens, ensuring good fruit production. In addition to its practical use, it enhances the garden with its unique form and attractive silvery foliage. Developed by Prof. P.E. Brander in Hornum, Denmark, around 1999, this variety is also recognised in the market as Silverstar.

Plant Characteristics

  • Flowers: Produces small yellow-green, inconspicuous flowers at the tops of the shoots, typically blooming in late March and early April.
  • Leaves: Features lanceolate leaves measuring 4-5 cm in length and up to 1 cm in width, displaying a silvery green colour with a rough texture. Younger growth appears intensely grey-silver, while older leaves can turn olive-coloured.
  • Hardiness: This shrub is classified as hardy in zone 5b and requires protection for young seedlings during winter, such as covering with bark or agro-fleece.

Growing Conditions

The sea buckthorn plant thrives in full sun and is remarkably adaptable, tolerating poor soil salinity as well as calcareous soils. It is a low-maintenance choice, growing well in nutrient-poor, low-humus environments and is drought-tolerant. Pruning is unnecessary; however, severe stem shortening should be avoided to prevent branch drying.
