Product Details

The Otamatone is an innovative electronic musical synthesizer developed in Japan in 1998 by the CUBE toy company and Maywa Denki design firm. Shaped like an eighth note, its design also evokes a tadpole, with sound produced from its mouth on the notehead. To play, users must employ both hands: one hand holds and squeezes the head, altering the pressure to create sound effects, while the other hand glides on a ribbon controller along the stem to change pitch, allowing for both low and high sounds. The ribbon controller is designed to resemble a guitar, creating a closer spacing between higher notes. Additionally, variations in pressure on the head can produce a wah-wah effect, while shaking the neck introduces a vibrato effect. Controls on the back enable octave changes, volume adjustments, and power on/off functionality. The auditory experience resembles that of a theremin, synthesizer, or jinghu.
